California designates two free fishing days each year when anglers can fish without purchasing a sport fishing license. These events are part of CDFW's effort to introduce newcomers to the sport and promote outdoor recreation across the state.
2026 Free Fishing Days
| Date | Day | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| July 4, 2026 | Saturday | Independence Day weekend — peak fishing season |
| September 5, 2026 | Saturday | Labor Day weekend — excellent fall fishing |
What's Included
On free fishing days, you may fish without a sport fishing license in any public waterway in California. However, all other regulations still apply:
- All bag limits, size limits, and gear restrictions remain in effect
- Report cards (steelhead, salmon, etc.) are still required if you're targeting those species
- Marine protected area closures and special regulations still apply
- You must follow all catch-and-release rules in designated areas
Best Places to Fish on Free Days
CDFW stocks many lakes and rivers ahead of free fishing weekends, making these excellent destinations:
- Sierra foothills reservoirs: Folsom Lake, New Melones, Don Pedro — freshly stocked with rainbow trout
- Urban lakes: Lake Merced (SF), Castaic Lake (LA), Lake Miramar (SD) — accessible and family-friendly
- Coastal piers: No license required year-round, but free days are a great introduction to saltwater fishing
Tips for Free Fishing Days
- Arrive early — popular spots fill up fast on free days
- Check CDFW's trout stocking schedule for recently stocked locations
- Bring your own gear or look for local "loaner tackle" programs at state parks
- If you enjoy the experience, a full-year license starts at just $54 for residents
