Age-Based Exemptions

Military & Veteran Exemptions

Disability Exemptions

Location-Based Exemptions

  • Ocean pier fishing: No sport fishing license is required to fish from any public ocean pier or jetty in California — this applies year-round
  • Private ponds: No license needed to fish on private property where fish are not able to migrate to or from public waters

Special Event Exemptions

  • Free Fishing Days: Two designated days per year (typically July 4th weekend and Labor Day weekend) when no license is needed
